Broward College and Deerfield Beach Partner to Bring Workforce Education and Training to Residents

Free educational opportunities, workforce training, and support services are now available to those who live in zip codes 33441 and 33064. If you are a resident in these qualifying zip codes with a desire to build a career, find a better job, or make more money, then Broward UP™ could be just what you need.

The City of Deerfield Beach and Broward College partnership was made official at the City Commission Meeting on March 15, 2022. The City Commission voted unanimously to provide access to Broward UP to eligible residents. Broward UP, the UP meaning "unlimited potential," is a community-centric approach that aims to raise education access and attainment levels and drive economic mobility across Broward County.

"A college education is something that every individual should have access to," said Gregory Adam Haile, J.D., president of Broward College. "The partnership between the City of Deerfield Beach and Broward College seeks to bring high-quality educational opportunities directly into the community. It demonstrates that we are united in our efforts to eliminate barriers to higher education, bust myths around who is capable of attaining a college education and bring equitable learning opportunities to those with a will to succeed. Together, we will make strides toward providing educational attainment and economic mobility for every member of our community."

Broward UP was launched in 2018 in six zip codes with high unemployment and low post-secondary attainment. Last year, Broward College received a $30 million gift from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott and her husband Dan Jewett, allowing the College to expand its service model to Deerfield Beach zip codes 33441 and 33064. The City of Deerfield Beach began partnering with Broward College in 2020 as the City was launching its Ready2Work program.

“I’m really excited to have Broward College in our community”, said Deerfield Beach Mayor Bill Ganz. The value education is tremendous when you see that a dollar spent through Broward Up results in a return on investment of over $13.00. This is a tremendous benefit for Deerfield Beach residents and I look forward to hearing the success stories from participants.”

Broward UP availability in Deerfield Beach will increase residents' access to education by providing live and on-demand Broward College enrollment and financial aid webinars, expanding awareness of college opportunities to neighborhoods with the highest unemployment and lowest post-secondary attainment, delivering certification training at City facilities, and leveraging technology to bridge the digital divide. Participants will also be able to join apprenticeship and internship programs and job placement initiatives as part of an overall employment strategy.

A final component of the partnership is developing a marketing strategy to ensure program accessibility to residents in the identified zip codes. The first step in this marketing strategy will be a collaborative effort between the City of Deerfield Beach and Broward College to co-create a community mural in the City that will promote education and the arts.
